Shoe etiquette

Fortunately, there are no longer any strict rules for clothing and shoes. Anything goes – it is individual taste is that really counts. However, it is also a well-known fact that it is the exception that makes the rule, and that is why there are at least a few standards, in particular for special events that are more official or of course at work.

Elegance in business style
  • Before you decide on a certain look, you should first orient yourself to your environment. An advertising agency for example will be more relaxed about what you wear than a consultancy, bank or insurance company.
  • If a businesswoman wears a skirt, tights are a must for the perfect outfit – even if it is 30° C during the summer. If, however, you want to show your bare legs, then the toenails should be varnished and the hair on the legs should be carefully removed.
  • Higher heels allow legs and the figure to appear longer, however, the correct shoe for the business-look should not have a very high heel. Small guideline: the standard height should be about 3.5 cm.
  • Classic shoe types to complement a suit are the pumps, the town shoe, the strap shoe, the college slipper, and the ballerina shoe. An ankle-length skirt also looks good with boots or bootees. The whole look becomes even more fashionable if you combine boots or bootees with a knee-length skirt.
  • During the summer, strip sandals resp. light sandals or a D'Orsay pump provide a good alternative to the classic closed shoes mentioned above. Strip sandals with a high heel, however, would be overdressed.
  • A good match for the trouser suit is flat lace-up shoe such as the casual Derby, the classic elegant leather upper (e.g. the Oxford) or the Brogue.
  • That is the beauty of fashion: what has previously been an absolute taboo, one day becomes a highly topical fashion statement making its way into offices. For example, casual sneakers are now also worn with a suit.
  • Colours too have become a more familiar sight in the business world. What previously had to be classic unicoloured - at best black, grey or brown – may now be a bit more striking, following the colours of the season e.g. Two-tone orange-khaki or bright red.

Complete freedom of choice during leisure time
  • The general motto for leisure time is: Anything goes.
  • Dress according to mood, trend, personal taste, style, comfort, or functionality.
  • Typical leisure shoes are the Norwegian loafer, the casual Moccasin, the robust boot or shoes with a rustic Ghillie lacing.

Beautiful in the evening
  • It is a matter of course that you do not wear robust or clumpy shoes with an elegant evening dress. Here light and elegant shoes, such as strip sandals or pumps with high heels are the perfect match.
  • Shoes should be comfortable, so that you can move unconstrained for the whole evening, which however, should not mean that you resort to comfortable leisure shoes. They appear far too casual, thereby do not fit the occasion.
  • In general, shoes can be more unusual and extravagant in the evening.
