More commonly seen in menswear, brogues are also a fantastic choice of shoe for women. Whether part of your work wardrobe, a special occasion, or even just grabbing a coffee out, dressing brogues effectively can give them a feminine twist that, while they can be all-business and classy, can also be flirty and fun.

Finding your perfect brogues

While brogues can be used as formal footwear, they can easily be dressed up or down. The style and colour you choose can make that easier or harder depending on what you pick, but you’ve plenty of options across the board.

Things to think about when buying brogues

Style – As with men’s options, women’s brogues offer a number of different colours, patterns, heel types, and embossing across the range. So whether you’re looking to pick up a flexible black pair that can stand up to any occasion or more unique pastel, metallic or bi-colours, the first thing you need to think about is how and where you plan to wear them.

Fit – It’s always best to measure your feet to ensure the best fit for your brogues. Some brands may run slightly smaller or larger, and you don’t want them to be too tight. Having room to wiggle your toes is ideal, but not enough so that your foot could slip out.

Material – Though leather and suede are the two most common, brogues can come in a variety of materials. Unless you have a specific preference, for longevity we’d recommend investing in a pair made from high-quality leather and take the time to learn how to properly take care of it – suede will need a very different care routine than harder leather.

How to style brogues

Although some may see brogues as relatively masculine shoes, the colour, style and how they’re worn can easily alter the way they appear. Styling them with a light cotton or shift-style dress gives them a more feminine and contemporary look. Or, for something more chic and casual, pair them with rolled up jeans and a jumper. Ultimately, the key thing with brogues is wearing them with confidence (and knowing you’ll look great doing so).
